Jeep's original parts catalog identifies OEM part number 52097522 for 1991-up Jeep Cherokee XJ and Comanche MJ applications equipped with the 4.0L 6-cylinder engine and AX15 5-speed manual transmission.
This same 23-spline short-input NP231 configuration also directly interchanges with applicable Jeep Wrangler YJ and other XJ/MJ applications using the matching transfer case configuration.
Jeep used multiple OEM assembly and tag numbers for compatible NP231 transfer cases. Your original transfer case does not necessarily need to have 52097522 stamped on it for this transfer case to be the correct replacement.
